If you’re looking for a neighborhood convenient to Cummings Research Park, it doesn’t get any better than Midtowne on the Park. Truth be told, Midtowne on the Park is not only convenient to Research Park (did I mention it’s actually IN research park), but it’s also 5 minutes away from Bridge Street Town Centre, retail shopping centers like Target and Wal-Mart, various restaurants, The Village of Providence, and more.

But what about the neighborhood you ask? At Midtowne on the Park, you’ll find two-story homes, ranch style homes, and town homes all priced from the low to mid $200s and up. The community features a “Central Park” location with a pond, playground, and gated swimming pool.

Another possibly overlooked attraction to Midtowne on the Park is its proximity to the greenway, disc golf course, and dog park in the creekwood subdivision. If you’re into any of those outdoor activities, you can be there in 5 minutes or less.

So, What is there to do on July 4th in the Huntsville area? Of course, on the day our city celebrates the independence of our great country, we want to see what most cities want to see – fireworks! With that in mind, here are my suggestions for the top things to do in the Huntsville area this July 4th weekend – including 4th of July fireworks in Huntsville, Decatur, and Madison!

Huntsville Stars Independence Day Celebration – Huntsville, Alabama

As usual, this year will provide a chance to catch some minor league baseball action and celebrate our nation’s independence after the game. However, due to the fact that the Huntsville Stars play on the road July 4th, their Independence Day Celebration will take place on July 3rd this year. Fireworks will begin after the game courtesy of Comcast. It also happens to be Costco night at Joe Davis Stadium. If you bring your Costco membership card you’ll receive 50% off your ticket purchase! So it isn’t exactly July 4th yet, but make it a weekend celebration and you’ll get to see fireworks galore beginning at the Stars game on July 3rd.

4th of July Celebration at Dublin Park – Madison, Alabama

Madison Parks and Recreation will be kicking things off this year at Dublin Park beginning at 2:00 p.m. and continuing through the night with a fireworks display at dark. Activities will include a live band, The Shakes, performing from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Also, children will enjoy inflatables and vendors will be on hand providing food and snacks. The Spirit of America Festival - Decatur, Alabama

Deemed one of the “Top 20 Events in the Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society, the Spirit of America Festival is embarking on its 44th year of festivities. This 4th of July celebration in Decatur is all about three words – food, fun, and fireworks. It all starts on July 2nd and goes through July 4th. Things kick off on July 4th with bike parade registration at noon followed by a flag raising at 12:30 p.m. Activities like cheerleading and gymnastics exhibitions, live music, children’s areas, and Miss Point Mallard pageants continue throughout the day with the event being capped off by fireworks at 10:00 p.m. That’s great for folks who may want to catch the Madison fireworks at dark and then head over to Decatur for round two! Also, three awards will be given to our serviceman for their outstanding service to our country during the Spirit of America award ceremony. This festival is truly an all day, patriotic event. So there you have it. Three places to enjoy 4th of July fireworks in Huntsville, Madison, and Decatur. What makes this year great for fireworks? Due to scheduling, you can see all three fireworks displays if you plan it right. Stay safe and have a great 4th of July weekend!

There’s a few reasons why Huntsville, Alabama golf courses may interest you. For one, you play golf in Huntsville because you live here. Call me captain obvious but, ok, fair enough.

The other reason is that you may be moving to Huntsville and you’d like to know what your options are as far as Huntsville, Alabama golf courses go. You may be moving here for a job, because your spouse got a job, or simply because you like Huntsville. Either way, you’re looking for more than Huntsville real estate, you’re looking at the community. And, if you’re a golfer, I’m hoping a series of posts on Huntsville golf courses will help you get acquainted with your golf options in Huntsville.

First stop – Colonial Golf Course, Meridianville, Alabama. Yes, technically Colonial Golf Course is in Meridianville, Alabama. However, it’d be silly not to include it as an option for Huntsville golf courses when the value you get is well worth the 20 minute commute.

Of all the golf courses in Huntsville, Alabama; Colonial has quickly become one of my favorites. There are reasons for that and different variables factor into why I like Colonial Golf Course so much. The first reason is price. The price does change according to the day, but you can play 18 holes with a cart at Colonial for anywhere between 23 and 31 dollars during the week. That price equals value golf in my book.

Now, there are other golf courses in Huntsville, Alabama that are just as cheap and possibly even cheaper, but you’ve got to keep the course condition in mind. Colonial Golf Course isn’t a very hard golf course. There aren’t too many bunkers and not much water. If you hit the ball straight, you’ll score well. But the biggest factors when determining the shape of a golf course, for me, are fairways and greens. Hopefully they’re are the only conditions you’ll play from! Colonial Golf Course has both of those factors down. The fairways are nice and I’m not sure I’ve seen too many rough patches on the greens. If you’re putting well, the greens will reward you just fine.

Some people may not think of this when discussing the value of a golf course, but Colonial Golf Course has some of the best carts I’ve ever driven. Seriously! I promise I could tell the difference or I wouldn’t bring it up in this post.

Last, but not least, the crew at Colonial Golf Course is comprised of top-notch, nice people.

If you’re looking for Huntsville golf courses under 35 dollars during the week, give Colonial Golf Course a try. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed and you’ll see why I consider Colonial not be cheap golf, but value golf – something most places could use more of!

The Village of Providence was designed to be its own happening town within the Huntsville city limits. It sits a short distance from the Huntsville – Madison city line and as you’ll see in the photo gallery below, Providence carries its slogan well – Big City Life, Small Town Living. Don’t look now, but when it comes to Huntsville real estate, the Providence subdivision is quickly becoming the place to be.

Before we focus on the houses in the Providence Subdivision, let’s look at what The Village of Providence offers as a whole. It truly is a pedestrian community as anything you could possibly need is within walking distance. That includes a corner market, a pizza joint, an upscale restaurant, a sports grille (coming soon), a drug store, a dentist, a dry cleaner, a little gym, and so on.

Kalou’s Corner Market is a great little grocery store offering delicious options for breakfast and lunch at the cafe. And of course, a great selection of wine, beer, cheese, meats, and groceries can be found at Kalou’s. They also keep the community involved by having “steak night,” “beer night,” and various other events.

Mellow Mushroom is a hip pizza joint just across from Kalou’s. If you’ve never had their calzones or pizza, you’re in for a treat. Also in The Village of Providence, you’ll find Five Points Cleaners, Roosters Barber Shop, Grille 29, Phuket – Thai Cuisine, @Homes Realty, and various other restaurants and businesses.

If all this sounds exciting, wait until you see the homes! The Providence Subdivision features gorgeous homes with charming character and landscaping to match. Some feature large columns and multiple stories while others have a more relaxed, white picket fence appeal. Most of the homes in Providence access their garage through a back alley and while they lack a backyard, that might be accommodated by their clubhouse, pool, playground, field, and dog park.

Of the many things Huntsville has to offer, perhaps the most overlooked is the opportunity for time outdoors. In this installment of things to do in Huntsville, Alabama, I’m not really talking what I might call “extreme” outdoors like hiking, mountain biking, camping, fishing, and so on. Monte Sane State Park and our various water ways are great for those activities, but I’m talking “outdoors” in the context of just getting out of the house and enjoying the weather. The relaxing type of outdoor activities.

With that being said, I’d like to introduce you to one of my favorite parks – Creekwood Park. As you’ll see in the video, there are two ways to get to Creekwood Park. The main entrance is in the Creekwood Subdivision which is on Slaughter Road. The other way is via the greenway. You can get to the greenway on Old Madison Pike, between Slaughter Road and Research Park. Keep in mind if you decide to walk the greenway it’s about two miles to get to Creekwood Park.

Creekwood Park has several activities that make it a fun place for families. A pretty large playground is a plus for anyone with kids, not to mention lots of grassy land to play on whether you’re throwing a frisbee or going on a picnic. There’s also a nice disc golf course for you avid disc golfers out there. And if you’re into wheels – in this case the rollerblade, skateboard, bicycle type of wheels – the greenway is perfect for you.

As you see in the video, Creekwood Park is home to my favorite dog park in Huntsville. The video highlights the dog park so there isn’t much need for words here. But, in order to clarify what may be hard to tell in the video, the dog park consists of two large areas to unleash your dog. The left side is for large breeds of 25 pounds or more and the right side is for small breeds under 25 pounds. Each side is about 80 to 100 yards long. It’s a huge area for dogs to run around and burn the energy most backyards limit. And, on those really hot days, take your dog over to the right of the dog park behind the nearest disc golf hole and you’ll find the creek. If your dog likes water, it will love pouncing around over there. You can usually expect a decent crowd, especially on the weekend, which is great if you’re into socializing your dog.
